Tragic Virginia Shooting: Ex-Lieutenant Governor Fatally Shoots Wife and Himself, Police Report”
On Thursday, April 16, local law enforcement officials confirmed a tragic murder-suicide involving former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax. According to Fairfax County Police, Fairfax fatally shot his wife before turning the gun on himself in their northern Virginia home shortly after midnight.
Speaking to reporters hours after the incident, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis stated that the murder-suicide appeared to stem from a domestic dispute related to the couple's ongoing divorce proceedings. The couple's teenage children were present inside the home at the time of the shootings and were the ones who reported the incident to 911.

Davis further explained that the former lieutenant governor had "recently been served some paperwork associated with an upcoming court proceeding," and that this event "apparently led to this incident." The tragic development adds another layer to Fairfax's already controversial public history.
Fairfax, once considered a rising star within the Democratic Party, was elected alongside former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam. However, less than two years into his term, two women came forward accusing Fairfax of sexual assault in separate incidents occurring in 2000 and 2004. Fairfax denied the allegations at the time, insisting that both encounters were consensual.
Following the surfacing of those allegations, fellow Virginia Democrats pressured Fairfax to resign, and many of his own staff members quit. Despite the intense political and public backlash, Fairfax ultimately served his full term. He largely disappeared from the public eye after losing the Democratic primary race for Virginia governor in 2021, and his term in office officially ended the following year.
In the months leading up to Thursday's shooting, tensions within the household had reportedly escalated. According to Police Chief Davis, at some point while Fairfax and his wife were separated but still living together, Fairfax's wife had installed security cameras throughout their home. In January of this year, Fairfax called police to claim that his wife had assaulted him. However, Davis revealed that footage from those same cameras proved Fairfax's claim to be false.
Davis added that he believes the cameras were still operational during the events of Thursday's murder-suicide. He also confirmed that the couple's teenage children, who made the 911 call, are now safe and staying with other family members as authorities continue their investigation.
