Six people are detained after a deadly shooting at an illicit mining location in the Western Region.





Six individuals have been taken into custody by the Ghana Police Service's Western Region Command in relation to a gunshot death that occurred at an illegal mining (galamsey) site in the Nzema East District.


The deceased, 45-year-old Angu Mensah, who served as the Abusuapanyin (family head) of Gwira Ampanise, was shot during a misunderstanding at the mining site on Sunday, May 26, at approximately 11:45 a.m.

According to the Police Command, a distress call was received at the Axim police station around 1:20 p.m., prompting officers from the local division and the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate to respond immediately.

According to preliminary findings, Mensah and a few people at the location got into a fight. Alfred Sadick, also referred to as "Strong Man," is a suspect who reportedly shot the victim in the chest during the altercation.

Hamza Abubakar, 36; Hamidu Seidu, 42; Francis Biewose, 26; Bai Yaozheng, 36; Liu Gang, 43; and Wen Xien Wen, 45 are the six people who are presently being held by the police.

There are three Chinese and three Ghanaians in the group. According to the authorities, they are supporting investigations.

Angu Mensah's remains has been placed in the mortuary of the Axim Government Hospital for autopsy and preservation.

In the meantime, authorities are searching for Alfred Sadick, the main suspect, and are requesting information from the public regarding his whereabouts.

Supt. Olivia E. Adiku, head of the Western Region Command's Public Affairs Unit, advised anyone with reliable information to get in touch with the Axim Police station or the Regional Police Command.

The public has been reassured by the command that measures are being made to hold all offenders accountable.
