According to accounts from the scene, the three-wheeled vehicle was deliberately torched by the mob as a form of immediate, extrajudicial punishment for the alleged crimes.

Fortunately, before the situation could escalate further into deadly violence, local vigilantes who were patrolling the area rushed to the location and intervened decisively. Their swift action made it possible to rescue three suspects from the clutches of the angry mob, one of whom was a woman, thereby saving them from being lynched on the spot. The vigilantes then took the suspects into their custody, escorted them to their office for safety, and later handed them over to the police for formal investigation and legal processing.

An eyewitness who preferred to remain anonymous for security reasons recounted that the entire episode took place at approximately 12:20 p.m. on Monday, the 15th of June, 2026. According to this witness, the trouble began when a victim of an alleged theft raised a loud alarm after realizing that their mobile phone had been snatched. That alarm quickly drew the attention of residents in the vicinity, who mobilized spontaneously and managed to apprehend the suspected thieves without delay.

Citing a report from Daily Trust, further details emerged indicating that a group of angry young men later stormed the location where the suspects were being held. These youths were intent on lynching the suspects immediately, but the vigilantes stood firm, prevented the lynching, and safely extracted the suspects from the volatile scene. Following their intervention, the suspects were taken to the vigilantes’ office and subsequently transferred to the police for further action.

In the aftermath of the incident, a considerable number of residents gathered at the scene and expressed their frustration over what they described as a troubling increase in phone thefts occurring inside tricycles over recent days. Many commuters, they lamented, have fallen victim to such thefts, losing their mobile phones to cleverly operating thieves who allegedly use tricycles as mobile platforms for their illicit activities.

One of the local residents, a man named Mr. Isa Bello who lives in the Zololo area, shared his thoughts on the matter. He stated, “Some persons suspected to be phone thieves were attacking people and collecting phones and money, and today, they were caught. We thank God for that.” He went on to add, “This was not the first time they had been terrorising the area in the early mornings, afternoons and late evenings, dispossessing residents of valuables such as phones, laptops and cash.” His remarks underscored a growing sense of insecurity among the community and a feeling that residents have been left with little choice but to resort to self-help when confronted with recurring criminal activities.
